A look At Yeovil Town’s Ascent

Yeovil may have sprung a surprise on Millwall on the first game of the season, but will they be able to do it often enough to keep themselves in the Championship?

Without meaning to put a dampener on the Glovers’ impressive start, it is important to remember that this is their first ever campaign in the second tier of English football.  Ten years ago they had just won the Conference and were enjoying their debut in the Football League.  After a solid eight-placed finish, the following season saw them clinch the fourth division title to send them to the lofty heights of League One, where they would remain for eight consecutive years.

Such stability has played an integral part to Yeovil’s progress.  Their growth has been slow but sure, but the fact remains that Gary Johnson’s side were anything but favoured to achieve promotion last season.  They had not finished in the top half of the table since 2007, with their previous league position of 17th being one of their lowest in the division.  Steering through the unpredictable route of the play-offs, however, the Championship turned out to be the club’s destination.

A club climbing so high in such a short space of time can often result in a sharp decline, but it also provides the platform for plenty of the underdog stories that make the sport so great.  With 18 former Premier League teams in this season’s second division, Yeovil will look to show they have just as much of a right as them to be there.

A decade ago, the Somerset club acquired their first taste of league football.  Having obviously liked it, they have never looked back, and will now be taking their appetite to the Championship.

Can Yeovil continue to look forwards, or have they bitten off more than they can chew?
