News of Manchester United triggering the release clause of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera is building, and a deal is said to be on the horizon. But while Arsenal are on the verge of signing Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil, we take a look what this La Liga player can offer the Red Devils.
Last season Herrera participated in 29 league games but scored just once, which won’t really excite the Old Trafford faithful.
He did sculpt 37 chances for Bilbao, two of those being assists, but his trade is as a box-to-box midfielder, which United desperately need. His energy to get up and down the pitch is infectious to his team-mates and he invigorates those around him.
He won 63% of his duels last term, which was made up of 90/117 tackles being won, 53% of his 40 headers being successful, as well as others.
He made an average of two defensive actions per game while making just one mistake, which led to nothing.
United are in need of another body or two in the middle of their side and Herrera and Fellaini could plug that nicely. With Michael Carrick providing the anchor, and Shinji Kagawa waiting in the wings, it could finally mean that Tom Cleverley can have a rest.
