3 Players Who Could Shore Up Arsenal’s Defence

With Bacary Sagna having to cover the central areas of the Arsenal defence at present, we have taken a look at three centre-backs who would, in my opinion, shore up the Gunners’ backline.

1) Kyriakos Papadopoulos

The Schalke man is a colossal in every sense of the word and could scare the life out of a grizzly bear. His humungous presence on the pitch does wonders to any defensive unit he operates in and would add youth to the Arsenal back four. With Sagna on the right, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen (when all available) fighting for the central spaces and Nacho Monreal on the left, the Emirates side aren’t exactly blessed with fresh faces.

The Schalke man would provide dominance on the floor, the air and can also pick a pass.

2) Federico Fazio

Seville’s 26-year-old centre-back Federico Fazio is a player that many Premier League clubs have apparently looked at. His coolness on the ball compliments his comittment of getting in the way of the ball and would sit next to Mertesacker beautifully. Towering at 6ft5, Fazio is a domineering figure in the air and provides a real danger at set-pieces.

He currently has two full Argentina caps and over 150 first team games for his La Liga employers which suggests that the daunting task of slotting into the English topflight wouldn’t be a huge deal for him.

3)  Nicolas N’Koulou

For me, this man would be the perfect addition into the Arsenal backline. Not only is he comfortable in being deployed in any role across the defensive unit, but he is still only 23 and has 36 caps for his country, Cameroon.

The Marseille defender is agile, intelligent both on and off the ball and has a very cultured feel when in possession. N’Koulou currently has two years on his contract, so a fee for the player could be cheaper than a lot of other options.

Do you feel as if the defence is sorted, Arsenal fans? Or do you agree that another face at centre-back would go a long way?
