Where Does David Luiz Fit Into The Chelsea Team?

With reports suggesting the Brazil international David Luiz turned down the approaches of European champions Bayern Munich in the summer to stay at Chelsea, I thought that I would have a look at where the fuzzy-haired defender-turned-midfielder will fit in when he returns from injury.

It was obvious that Jose Mourinho was keen to reinstate John Terry into the heart of the Chelsea midfield as soon as the Portuguese manager returned to Stamford Bridge, it was just a question as to whether it would be Gary Cahill or Luiz partnering him. With Branislav Ivanovic also able to operate in a central position, Chelsea are more than covered at the back.

The west London outfit currently sit second in the table after the first three games having conceded just once so far in the league. Terry and Cahill have done a fine job in making sure the backline isn’t penetrated, and as long as they stay fit you’d expect them to carry on.

So what about a midfield role for Luiz? He was fancied as an anchorman by Rafa Benitez because of his tendencies to drive forward with the ball, and the fact that if he lost possession there was enough behind him to rectify it.

But with Ramires and Frank Lampard operating the two pivots in the 4-2-3-1 so far this season, I’m not sure whether or not he’ll get a look in there, especially with Jon Obi Mikel and Michael Essien patiently waiting for their go.

It’s a long season, and there will rotations throughout the squad, and until Terry or Cahill slip up I can’t see Luiz getting back into the starting 11.

What do you reckon Chelsea fans?
