The argument whether or not David Luiz is a central defender is not what this article is targeting, but it does come into what the Mirror are reporting. They suggest that Jose Mourinho is in the hunt for another centre-back in the shape of Eliaquim Mangala, but do they need him?
The 22-year-old is a giant at the back, but with John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic able to play in the heart of the defence, as well as Luiz, the defence doesn’t look that feeble.
Terry isn’t getting any younger, we know that, so the bullish Porto centre-half could be seen as the perfect replacement for him. We know that the Chelsea skipper will be the mainstay in the centre of defence this season, if he can steer clear of injury, with Cahill playing alongside.
But Mourinho is a big fan of Mangala and is determined to capture his services after failing with a move in the summer.
The Porto number 22 has completed a huge 91% of his passes so far this season in the Champions League, 57% of his personal duels – which includes 100% of his tackles and 67% of his headers – and averaged six defensive actions per game.
What do you reckon Blues, is this the man to shore up your backline?
