When Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil in the summer the red half of north London were dreaming of a Premier League triumph. Memories instantly jumped back to the days when the Gunners were a serious threat and boasted the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Freddie Ljungberg, and probably rightly so.
The Germany international is an incredible talent, and I still cannot believe that Real Madrid let him go. He created 91 chances for his Los Blancos team-mates – 29 more than Cristiano Ronaldo – and hit the shot with 82% of his shots.
In my opinion, Ozil is the finest playmaker in world football. And this clip supports that notion. Sort of.
He may have all the technical ability of a superstar, the awareness and the creativity to conjure up such beauty on a football field, but this is my favourite Mesut Ozil moment.
While warming up for Germany in the World Cup of 2010, he casually spits out his chewing gum. However, before it gets the chance to hit the floor, Ozil volleys it back into the air and effortlessly catches it back in his mouth.
Disgusting, maybe. Impressive, definitely.
We’ve all tried it, though, whether it be at school or at football, and we know how happy he will be that the camera caught it.
