When Adnan Januzaj struck two superb goals against Sunderland a few weeks ago the whole world was up in arms about the terms of which countries players could represent at international level. However, it also showed us just what the teenager was capable of. He then went on to sign a new big money contract at Old Trafford and has been on our screens ever since, but is the 18-year-old all that he’s cracked up to be?
It’s difficult to fathom a solid answer, after all, football is a game of opinions. Some fans prefer certain attributes in a player and so naturally rate different positions on the pitch higher than others. It’s also difficult to tell as Januzaj has only played four Premier League games for United.
But let’s take a closer look at the winger’s statistics.
The two goals he scored against a lowly Sunderland side were his only two of the campaign, but he has created a further three chances. The young Belgian-born forward has completed 71% of his individual duels, including 10/14 of his take ons, and has hit the target with 57% of his shots.
He certainly looks as though he will have a long and successful career, if he is able to steer clear of any injuries, but there are certainly areas of his game that he can improve on, naturally. In United’s draw with Southampton this weekend he completed just 76% of his passes and failed with his cross and his single take on.
Januzaj has sparkled on the flank at Old Trafford and is already becoming a fan favourite, but whether he is the real deal we will have to wait and see.
