A Tribute To Oscar – Chelsea’s Brazilian Diamond

When Chelsea finally got their hands on Brazilian playmaker Oscar, fans across west London were both relieved and excited. However, despite his explosive appearances previously with Internacional in his homeland, he took some time to settle in the Premier League and was the subject of some questioning from a few pockets of Blues fans. Now, though, Oscar is one of the first names on the team sheet and is excelling under Portuguese boss Jose Mourinho.

Oscar’s stint in the team under Roberto Di Matteo was his settling in period, and when Rafa Benitez was introduced as Chelsea gaffer Oscar started to find his feet. His low centre of gravity, his incredible awareness on the ball and his determination saw him occupying the right midfield berth for 34/38 of the club’s Premier League games.

He scored four league goals, as well as a few corkers in the Champions League, but made 47 key passes – a number bettered by only Juan Mata (95) and Eden Hazard (65).

This season Oscar has continued in his role despite the increase in quality that are able to play there. This season Oscar has already matched his league goal tally from last season in just eight games, as well as creating an additional 10 chances for his team-mates. He also scored against Basel in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat against the Swiss side.

Oscar is also happy to chip in with the defensive side of things, averaging two defensive actions per game. His mindset combined with his physical attributes are a cocktail of greatness, and the fact that he’s only 22 suggests that he will only get better.
