If there is one thing I am comfortable with this season, as an Arsenal fan, it is our midfield options. With Aaron Ramsey scoring a hatful of goals already, Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta proving their worth in the defensive roles and Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky strutting their stuff in the attacking areas, I am proud to call myself a Gooner.
However, reports from Spanish media outlet MundoDeportivo suggesting that Ilkay Gundogan is refusing to sign a new contract at Borussia Dortmund has got me thinking. Although the reports say that Real Madrid is the likely destination should the Germany international make a switch, there are few players that I would like to see in the Arsenal midfield, so I thought I would discuss where he would fit in at the Emirates.
Wenger is growing friendly with the Germans and in my opinion the arrival of Gundogan – although unlikely, he has been linked – could spell the end for Jack Wilshere. The England international has been out of sorts this season for me and needs to be tucked back inside, but with Flamini, Ramsey and Arteta in such fine form it’s proved difficult.
Gundogan is a box-to-box midfielder with the energy of Ramsey, the intelligence of Flamini and the guile of Arteta, but the technique to overshadow them all.
For me, Gundogan would have to slot straight into the side, in perhaps the following formation:
Ramsey Flamini
Ozil Gundogan Cazorla
Giroud
What do you think Gunners?
