7 Players In The Swiss Topflight Who Should Be Premier League Targets

Next in the series of leagues I’m going to take a closer look at is the Swiss Super League – a league which contains the likes of FC Basel, BSC Young Boys and Grasshoppers. The league contains a number of players from the surrounding countries and into certain parts of Asia but as with any league, there’s players from all corners of the globe.

Many players use this league as a bus stop, they wait around until something comes along which they want. However, that bus sometimes never turns up and they’re left to linger or find a bus they didn’t particularly want to get on. Sorry for the long and slightly confusing metaphor, but basically what I’m trying to say is that the players who join this league don’t tend to stick around for long. That’s a roundabout way of introducing you to my list.

1. Josef Martinez

The 20-year-old is the league’s joint top goal scorer, tied with Marco Streller of Basel on 7 goals. He also has the same amount of assists with three. The Venezuelan international is on loan at FC Thun from BSC Young Boys so his confidence is sure to grow this season and his parent club will be looking forward to seeing how this player turns out in the future. However, I’d expect a few clubs to be hovering around him fairly soon so Young Boys will face a fight to keep hold of him.

2. Davide Calla

The FC Aarau left midfielder is another player in fine form in front of goal as he’s scored 6 and grabbed 3 assists in the league. The 29-year-old is certainly well travelled around Switzerland as he’s turned out for 8 different Swiss clubs since 2000. A career which has brought him 55 goals and 46 assists in 274 appearances. He could do a job at a relegation endangered Premier League side, I reckon.

3. Michael Frey

Technically, it’s another Young Boys player if you accept Josef Martinez but that’s not the point – the point is that Frey is in similar form to Davide Calla and Martinez as he’s scored 5 goals but has grabbed 4 assists which is more than the former two. The 19-year-old is definitely one for the future and one for clubs to keep their eye on

4. Yann Sommer

The 24-year-old Basel ‘keeper is a solid and consistent performer for the reigning champions of the league. He’s also in the Swiss international team and despite a dip in form quite recently, he’s certainly picked up in the past few months. 6 clean sheets in 22 games with 21 goals conceded. He would provide good depth to a top 6 or 7 side in the Premier League but would definitely be a starter at a mid table club.

5. Mohamed Salah

A lot has been said about the Egyptian since his performance for Basel against Chelsea last season in the Europa League where he made top quality defenders look distinctly average. He was the main reason why Basel almost knocked the eventual winners. 23 games, 7 goals and 5 assists. Just goes to show that he has the stats to support the hype.

6. Izet Hajrovic

The right winger is one of the more expensive players in the Swiss league, valued at around £4-£5 million. That is quite a large sum if you compare it to others. 5 goals and 3 assists in 11 league appearances are, again, very good stats and ones which should attract potential suitors.

7. Fabian Schar

Another Basel player makes the list which just proves their dominance in this league. Schar is a young centre back who, after some incredible form, has levelled out and is quietly churning out performances which ensure victory goes to Basel. However, his incredible form has attracted interest from Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan as well as many others which just proves how good the player is at such a young age.
