For me, David Moyes has holes in his squad, most noticeably in the middle. His static midfield has been found out at times already this season and is in need of strengthening in the new year. The defence could also do with a bit of a reshuffle, in my eyes, but the last position they need any more players in is up top. However, the Daily Star are reporting that Moyes holds an interest in Christian Benteke – Aston Villa’s 19-goal hitman.
But with likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck, where would the Beligum international fit in?
What I would say is that United don’t currently hold a player like Benteke. While Van Persie oozes class and is all about the spectacular, Hernandez’s strengths are deep inside the opposition area and Welbeck flourishes in the wider areas.
Rooney is the most similar, I’d say, but there are still huge differences. Benteke loves running at players and is exceedingly good in the air, whereas Rooney is always looking for the killer ball or a first time shot.
The likelihood is that the arrival – if it happened – would spark the end of Hernandez’ time at Old Trafford and leave it as a three way tie between Benteke, van Persie and Rooney for the forward slots.
I’d suggest that he would be better off elsewhere, in terms of playing time.
United fans, where would he fit into your side?
