So, there we have it, Manchester United have finally won a game. Their poor form of late has been followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League to keep them top of their group. Here are five things we learned from the game.
1) United can win at home
Coming into the game United had lost two home games on the bounce, first to Everton and then to Newcastle. They have also lost to West Brom at Old Trafford this season and there was worry that the slick Shakhtar side would find some joy.
However, a solid performance saw the Red Devils prove the doubters wrong and pick up the victory.
2) Phil Jones could be the solution
He scored the winner, but he also ran the show from the middle of the pitch in the absence of Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini. He made four interceptions, won five headers and completed 91% of his passes.
3) United fans standing with their manager
Throughout the 90 minutes the Old Trafford faithful were behind their side, signing and roaring them on to get forward. There were a few moans and groans when Ashley Young kept missing his opportunities but in general it was a pleasant atmosphere, crowned by the ‘David Moyes’ red army chant at the end.
4) United upping their passing
Because of the lack of a midfield, United have found themselves being overrun in the middle recently but it was a different story tonight. They completed 438 of their 512 attempted passes.
5) Evans is the main man at the back
Rio Ferdinand isn’t getting any younger and his performances are showing that he is past his best. Evans, though, keeps getting better and is surely now considered the club’s number one centre-back. During the tie he made seven clearances, won three of the four of his headers and completed 88% of his passes.
