100% Tackle Success And 95 Completed Passes: A Closer Look At How John Terry Bossed The Chelsea Defence Against Steaua

Over the last couple of weeks we have seen Chelsea have a few blips at the back. First they conceded three goals at Sunderland but were able to run out 4-3 winners, and then a matter of days later they lost  3-2 away at Stoke which is unlike any team that Jose Mourinho has ever managed – the Portuguese boss is renowned for his tight, counter-attacking football.

John Terry’s defence were at a loss going into their Champions League game with Steaua Bucharest last night, but the captain, leader legend took them by the scruff of the next and commanded his side to a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge to win the group.

The 33-year-old was in blistering form. Everything that the opposition threw at him he dealt with, whether that be in the air or on the floor. He completed three clearances, made two interceptions and won the only tackle that he went in for.

It wasn’t just how he won possession, though, it was what he did with it. Terry completed 95 of the 96 passes that he attempted in the 90 minutes, giving him a completion rate of 99% – which is truly staggering for any player, never mind a centre-back.

The way he lead his troops to the three points was admirable, especially after some unorganised displays over the last few weeks, and the style he did it in just about sums up John Terry.

Take a bow, son.
