It was no surprise to us that the papers were plastered with stories about how David Moyes wanted Leighton Baines to follow him to Manchester United in the summer, but it did surprise some of us when it didn’t happen. Not as January approaches we gear up for the transfer rumours to start, but I am here to tell David Moyes to forge about going back for Baines and to turn his attention to Southampton’s Luke Shaw.
The 18-year-old has been incredible over the last season after establishing himself in the Saints’ first team. His storming performances last season were akin to someone with twice his experience, and this season he has carried on his tremendous form.
This season Shaw has played in 14 of Southampton’s 16 games and created 10 chances for his team-mates. He has averaged six defensive actions per game and won over 53% of his individual battles, including just over half of his take on attempts.
Shaw is a full-back who loves getting forward but he’s solid when tracking back. When he bombs down the flank he’s always looking to knock it inside to a colleague and continuing his run down into the wide areas before whipping ball into the box.
It’s astounding that he is still a teenager and if I was David Moyes I would be doing all I could to make a move happen.
