Despite some strong performances, Manchester United have struggled to find any real form in the Premier League this season. A reason for that could be David Moyes’ desire to add some youth onto the wings – Adnan Januzaj and Wilfried Zaha are still making their way in the game. There is one man who has stolen the spotlight over the last few weeks though, and that is wide man Antonio Valencia. The Mirror are reporting that he will be rewarded with a new contract, but overall does the Colombian deserve it?
He’s played a major part of Moyes’ time at the club, making 14 appearances and creating 14 chances, but there are some flaws in his game that are easy to spot. He is quite one dimensional when attacking full-backs and can become quite predictable, and in turn he has completed less than half of his dribbles.
He’s also lazy in the tackle and has no aerial presence whatsoever, despite his muscular frame, but I feel that the pros outweigh the cons.
For a winger his pass success in considerably high – he has completed 85% of his attempted balls, and has a 50% shot accuracy.
His link up play has been essential to United’s attack of late and I think that he is thoroughly deserving of a new deal, especially as he is apparently one of the club’s lowest earners.
United fans, do you agree?
