Ask any Manchester United fan which part of their side they would want strengthening in January and I don’t think there would be too many who said anything other than the midfield. David Moyes’ midriff looks awfully bare right now and they are in need of shoring that up, in my eyes, but reports from Mark Lawrenson in the Mirror suggest that United should be in the hunt for La Liga striker Diego Costa. Despite the Spaniard scoring 23 goals in 23 games so far this season for Atletico Madrid, here is why I would suggest that United should forget about trying to sign him.
In my eyes, there are five reasons why, and four of those are in the shapes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez, with the bonus ball being Danny Welbeck. Rooney has scored nine goals in 16 league outings so far this season, van Persie has scored seven in 11, Welbeck has grabbed six in 13 and Chicharito just the once.
Although the latter may not be an impressive statistic, the point is that United are fully covered in the striker department.
The other reason that I referred to is that the midfield needs to be the priority. Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini are all slow, sluggish players who rely on their range of passing, and they need an energetic player to spruce things up a bit.
Instead of splashing a huge amount of money on Costa, Moyes needs to focus on his problem area, the midfield.
