Arsenal travelled to Villa Park last night knowing that they needed to win to restore their place at the top of the Premier League. Two goals within a minute of each other saw the north London side run out comfortable winners in the end, though a Christian Benteke header saw the game end 2-1. Here are the three Arsenal players who stood out for me.
1) Jack Wilshere
The England midfielder was key to eveything the Gunners did last night. Not only was his goal outstanding but he kept things running from his role and also sparked numerous chances when going forward.
He won half of his six take ons and completed 60/70 of his passes.
2) Olivier Giroud
From Wilshere’s swift ball inside, Giroud was able to pluck it from the air, wriggle free from the defender and lash it past Brad Guzan, although it took a knick of the defender’s leg.
He won two of his three headers and had four shots at goal during the game and caused problems throughout.
3) Laurent Koscielny
Both Arsenal centre-backs stood out in the tie but for me Koscielny was that little bit more impressive. The France international made 16 clearances on his own, won three of his five headers and remarkably completed 98% of his passes.
He, alongside Per Mertesacker, was key to the victory.
