He may not score the number of goals Olivier Giroud does and he might not be as powerful as the Frenchman, but if reports are correct that Arsenal could be willing to sell Germany international Lukas Podolsk, then I think the Gunners could very well regret that decision.
The reports suggest that flogging him could have something to do with making room for Mario Balotelli, but I think that would be an even worse decision. Hear me out.
With Theo Walcott likely to miss the rest of the season and Nicklas Bendner’s fitness coming into question, right now Giroud is Wenger’s only real option to lead the line. The France international has played over 30 games already this season and is in major need of a rest, which is where Podolski comes in.
The former Koln forward has played up front on many occasions over his career and can provide cover and therefore keeping him fresh for the rest of the season. His goal tally is also pretty impressive, having scored a goal every other game this season (5 in 10) – in ratio terms – and finishing with 16 last time out.
He can also play on the wing. I would say that he looks most comfortable in the wide position as he has the pace, the skill and the thunderbolt of a strike when cutting inside.
Should Arsenal get rid of the utility forward then they would have to bring in two players I feel – that’s how highly I rate him, and although many will disagree with me – I have had a season ticket for the past seven years and have watched him closely since his arrival from Germany. Fans see things that aren’t picked up by the cameras, such as his movement.
Please Arsene, don’t sell.
