Bayern Munich are the form side in the whole of Europe right now in terms of major trophies won. Last season they steamrolled over pretty much everything that came in their way and at the end they had five trophies to their name – the Super Cup, the Club World Cup, the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League.
The Bavarians have carried on in the same form too with the added heads of Mario Gotze, Thiago Alcantara and new boss Pep Guardiola, but it has been the old faces that have kept their run intact.
Philip Lahm has been tremendous, but Mario Mandzukic has been the one firing in the attack.
The big Croatian has scored 18 goals this season so far in his 30 outings, and three of those came in Bayern’ s cup game with Wolfsburg last night in their 5-0 win.
The striker was linked with a move to Arsenal not so long ago and the three goals only confirm what many Arsenal fans feared – he would have been a massive boost to their attacking options had he joined.
He is a strong player who is a natural finisher and he thrives in the big games – something Giroud certainly doesn’t do. Gooners may not want to hear it, but I think they may regret not moving for him in the January window.
