The future of Rio Ferdinand at Manchester United still remains a mystery, with the 35-year-old stating that he wants to continue “living the dream” at Old Trafford. Like the rest of his team, Ferdinand has struggled for consistency and has looked well out of his depth in the big games this season.
Now I am not one for being sentimental, but I think Ferdinand is deserving of another season with the most successful Premier League club in history.
I have not based this opinion on the dedication and success that the former England star has given to United for what is fast approaching 12 years.
Ferdinand’s experience and leadership could be a vital asset in the next campaign for a squad which at the moment is severely lacking individuals who can inspire others.
I believe Ferdinand’s days of competing with the cream of Europe and the very best in the Premier League are behind him. However he would still be an excellent squad acquisition and somebody who the younger defenders can approach for advice to help develop their game.
At their peak Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic formed an almost unbreakable partnership which helped lead to a record-breaking run of 14 consecutive clean sheets in Premier League matches. Offloading both of these players in the summer could come back to haunt David Moyes.
