Why The FA Cup Is More Important To Arsenal Than Qualifying For The Champions League

Another substandard display by Arsenal somehow saw them overcome last year’s FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic, who once again performed admirably when all odds were stacked against them.

The outpour of relief was evident amongst the Arsenal players once Santi Cazorla had converted the winning penalty. You would have thought the Gunners had lifted the trophy such was the exuberance of their celebrations, but this only emphasised the length of time that has elapsed since Arsene Wenger’s side last won a piece of silverware.

Wenger claims that winning the FA Cup this season is more important than finishing in the top four and it would be argue to against this statement. Make no mistake, it will not be easy for the Gunners to defeat Hull, but Arsenal now have an incredible opportunity to bring long awaited success back to the club.

This has to take priority.

The year of 2005 was when Arsenal last won a trophy and their annual collapse in the title race has heightened frustration amongst the fans, who will surely cherish a memorable day out at Wembley over a 17th consecutive appearance in Europe’s top competition.

I am sure you will agree that the latter are remarkable figures by anybody’s standards, but deep down Wenger must know his squad is still not good enough to go all the way in Europe. He needs to concentrate on ensuring the trophy cabinet at the Emirates can once again be opened and further honours added to the club’s illustrious history. Consistency receives the plaudits, but it is winners that take the prizes.
