As the end of the 2013/14 Premier League season draws ever closer, respected writers, professionals and fans have all shared their picks on who makes their team, player and manager of the current campaign.
Although this season’s thrilling title race is yet to be concluded and still has many twists and turns to come, I have also made my mind up on who makes my team of 2013/14.
Lining up in a 4-4-2 wide diamond formation, with wingers on each side, my team of the season would line up like this.
Here is my defence.
Centre-Backs: Gary Cahill and John Terry – Chelsea
Chelsea’s English duo at the heart of the defence have been a vital to the Blues’ success in the league this season as the currently sit second in the league table with three games to go.
Jose Mourinho’s counter attacking football is built around a solid defence and the pairing of Terry and Cahill is tough for anyone to break down.
Martin Skrtel and Steven Caulker have been stand out performers for Liverpool and Cardiff respectively but as a pairing I’d have the Chelsea duo over anyone in the league at the moment.
Right-Back: Seamus Coleman – Everton
Seamus Coleman has been a revelation at right-back under Roberto Martinez, and has been key in Everton’s quest for European football. The Irishman has impressed both defensively and even more so going forward scoring 6 goals while assisting a further 2, and his development in a new free-flowing attack-minded system under Martinez cannot be ignored.
Left-Back: Leighton Baines – Everton
Much like his team mate on the opposite flank, Leighton Baines has been a stand out player in Everton’s season. Much has been made of the emergence of Southampton’s Luke Shaw at left-back this season, but for me, it’s 29-year-old Baines who has impressed the most.
Notching up a tally of 5 goals and 3 assists whilst being rock solid at the back, Baines has surely secured his place as England’s first choice left-back at this summer’s World Cup with another fine season in the Premier League.
