After a humiliating 5-0 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid last night, it is back to the drawing board for Guardiola and he is definitely going to try and shake things up.
If you didn’t look at the score, you would be forgiven for thinking Die Roten completely dominated both legs, more possession, better pass accuracy and more shots.
So where did it go wrong? The major problem for me was simple, a complete lack of penetration and runners in behind. Which is why Lewandowski’s arrival will be welcomed with open arms.
The Polish international’s arrival will undoubtedly see Mandzukic seeking a move away. So who are Bayern looking at for Lewandowski’s back-up?
Reports in this morning’s papers suggest that Newcastle’s on-loan striker Loic Remy is a target for Guardiola, and they could have done with him last night.
The French international has been linked with several Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Everton, and it seems parent club Queens Park Rangers will be unable to hold on to him.
It would be an interesting change for Bayern, with Lewandowski and Remy in the squad. Last night was a prime example of their deficiencies.
The main problem for me was everyone was wanting the ball into feet, including Manzukic and Muller, nobody was playing off the shoulder and making the Madrid defenders shift position.
Remy would enter knowing he is the understudy, but he would receive a pay rise, the move to a European powerhouse he wanted and the opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola.
