Manchester United have a history of fine centre-backs. Gary Palister and Steve Bruce through the nineties, and then Jaap Stam and a number of players. The Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic took over and made a name for themselves, but the Red Devils are now in need of a new duo. Rio Ferdinand is out of contract this summer, while Vidic is leaving the club, but United are looking at Mats Hummels according to reports. But what could he offer?
The Germany international hasn’t had the best of seasons, but his reputation across European football is huge. He has managed just 21 Bundesliga games in the current campaign – injury has restricted him in that aspect – but he has been solid when he has played.
He is superb in the air – he has won 95 of the 139 headers he has gone up for – and he is exceptional with the ball at his feet. He has completed 81% of his passes this season, despite playing a huge number of creative balls.
Hummels is a player who would thrive at United. He likes to play out with the ball and is still only 25.
For me it is a no-brainer, should he be available.
