For the first time this season, Atletico, Real and Barcelona all dropped points on the same matchday, which sets up an even more exciting end to the season.
Barcelona thought they were all but out of the title race on Saturday, as they dropped two points at home to lowly Getafe thanks to a last minute equalizer from Angel Lafita.
With Barcelona struggling, if Atletico could beat Levante away and Malaga at home, then Simeone’s men would win the title before their trip to the Camp Nou on the final day.
However, it was not to be as Levante ran out 2-0 winners. The Estadi Ciutat de Valencia is not an easy place to go as Sevilla, Barcelona and now Atletico have failed to win there.
Despite the impact this game had on the title race, the match has been overshadowed by another incident of racism, as a group of Atletico fans made monkey gestures toward Levante’s Papakouli Diop.
So with both title rivals dropping points, Real Madrid had the opportunity to ramp up the pressure even more by going second, three points behind Atletico with a game in hand.
But things don’t always go according to plan in football. Valencia in fact took the lead twice at the Bernabeu and if it wasn’t for a spectacular backheel goal from Ronaldo in the 92nd minute, Real would have come away with nothing.
This leaves the title race in Atletico’s hands. Beat Malaga and Barcelona and they are champions. If Barca beat Elche and Atletico and Real drop points they are champions. And if Barcelona beat Atletico and Real win all their games, they are champions.
