It is the absence of a world-class striker that many believe to have been the biggest cause of Chelsea failing to land the Premier League title in Jose Mourinho’s first season back at Stamford Bridge. Clearly this was a major factor with their main rivals Liverpool and Manchester City able to call on the worldly talents of Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero respectively.
However it would be superficial to simply blame their shortcomings on this one factor. They have been found wanting against the teams who have been battling against relegation for most of the campaign and in my eyes it is them and not Liverpool who should be ruing what is set to be a wonderful opportunity missed.
Chelsea are still rebuilding and players such as Frank Lampard are reaching the finale of what have been stellar careers in the blue shirts of the London based outfit. Lampard is not the only centre midfielder who may have to look elsewhere come the summer. Ramires has reportedly received interest from Spanish giants Barcelona, but it is pivotal that Chelsea retain his services ahead of next season.
Ramires would be a perfect bit for Barcelona, but Chelsea must not sell to another rival in Europe. The Brazilian international has bundles of energy which no other player in the Chelsea squad can match.
He fits perfectly into the Mourinho style of playing with his selfless running, drive and determination. At 27 years of age there is still time for Ramires to develop his game further and if he can begin to add goals to his game then Chelsea will have quite a player on their hands.
