David Luiz is supposedly high up on the Barcelona wish list this summer, and if I was Jose Mourinho, I would probably let him go. There are a couple of reasons why, which I will now briefly go over.
The first is that he is a complete liability. When in defence, he often gallops forward without thinking about the gaps he is leaving behind him and it exposes the Chelsea defence. When in midfield it is a similar situation but he seems to think his more offensive position gives him a reason to make rash challenges.
In his place, I would look to sign Maxime Gonalons, who is currently on the books of Lyon. He is still only 25, despite having played 140 league games for the club and notching six senior appearances for the France national side.
He would be brilliant in supporting Nemanja Matic in the middle of the pitch and carries a real physical presence. He’s superb in the air, his passing is exquisite and has an impressive tactical awareness, unlike Luiz.
This season he has averaged 3.3 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game in his 35 Ligue outings.
Sign him up, Jose.
