Jose Mourinho is one of the most successful managers currently operating in European football. The Chelsea boss has been in charge of Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Porto and is currently in his second stint at Stamford Bridge. He has won seven league titles with those clubs, two Champions leagues and a host of domestic cups. He also turned down the England job back in 2007, but he says the Three Lions have the quality to win this summer’s World Cup.
He told the Sun that he cannot understand why the national side’s Premier League stars continue to disappoint on the big stage.
It got me thinking whether we actually have a chance of winning the cup. People will instantly write me off as a hopeless optimist, but I genuinely think that the players in the squad are capable of bringing the trophy home.
Joe Hart is as good as any goalkeeper at the tournament and we have a real star in Wayne Rooney. He may be misfiring right now, but alongside Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturride this summer – a pairing that scored 30 Premier League goals between them last season – I think he will flourish.
The likes of Steven Gerrard, Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere are good enough to go up against anyone and we certainly have the fan base to act as a 12th man.
Can we dare to dream?
