Former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has apparently been told by Barcelona that he is not in their plans for next season and to find a new club. Although it was kind of expected, it will have Manchester United on high alert as they have previously been linked with a move. For me, he is not the player Louis van Gaal needs right now.
Their midfield is weak, I don’t think many are arguing that. However, they do hold a couple of holding midfielders and I think it would be a waste of money to add to that.
Michael Carrick was the star of the midriff last season and was supported by either Marouane Fellaini or Tom Cleverley, all of which have strong experience at the top level.
I don’t actually think Cleverley deserves his place at Old Trafford, but even then Darren Fletcher is there to cover.
With four holding midielders likely to be fighting for the two spots already, I would concentrate on signing a more offensive player like Kevin Strootman or Ivan Rakitic. Cesc Fabregas would have been perfect, in my opinion, but Chelsea have snapped him up.
United need someone to gel the team together are create opportunities, not another simple, ball-playing holding midfielder.
