Liverpool Eye Ageing Dutch Goal-Machine – Why The Reds Would Be Wise To Sign Him
This is certainly not the first time the Dutchman has been linked with a move to the Premier League, but Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is rumoured to be interesting last season’s runners up Liverpool. As well as competing in his home country, the striker has scored goals in Spain, Italy and Germany. Could he finally be about add England to that list?
According to Sky Sports, the player is being eyed up as another potential arrival at Anfield, with the Merseyside club having already completed the signings of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can. Currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup, the Reds are reportedly interested in tying up a deal for Huntelaar when he returns from Brazil.
If Luis Suarez were to leave Liverpool for Barcelona as some reports have suggested, his goals for the side would need to be replaced. After the Uruguayan’s incredible last campaign that task would be far from easy, but Huntelaar has proven himself capable of finding the net wherever he has played.
The forward’s goal statistics are actually incredible; in the Eredivisie he scored 109 times in 158 games, with 145 in 208 in all competitions whilst playing for top flight sides in his homeland. A season’s experience in each of La Liga and Serie A saw him attain much less dramatic figures, although he still managed impressive ratios of a goal every two-and-a-half games and every three-and-a-half games respectively. Huntelaar’s record for his current club Schalke stands at 91 goals in 139 games in all competitions, and so the Bundesliga side would obviously be very reluctant to lose him.
Having burst onto the scene with the Netherlands’ under-21s by scoring 18 times in 23 appearances, the striker has since racked 63 caps for the senior side. The most recent of his 35 strikes for the Oranje sent them to the quarter-finals of this summer’s World Cup.
Despite turning 31 years of age next month, Huntelaar still knows where the net is and Liverpool would be guaranteed goals if they signed him.
