Manchester United Linked With Switzerland Left-Back – Why Luke Shaw Could Face Fresh Competition At Old Trafford

The Red Devils may have already brought in Luke Shaw but, according to the Daily Mail, that isn’t stopping them looking at other potential left-backs they could sign.  The latest name to be linked with Manchester United is Ricardo Rodriguez, who despite his age of 21 does not seem like much of a youngster when compared with 18-year-old Shaw.

Rodriguez turns 22 not long after the Premier League season begins, and if United were to sign him they would be getting a player with plenty of experience.  Starting out at his hometown club FC Zurich, the defender has plied his trade in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg since January 2012.  Having impressed for Switzerland at this summer’s World Cup, his performances in Brazil could act as a catalyst in him joining one of Europe’s top clubs.

What the signing of Rodriguez would do however, is cast doubt over the future of Patrice Evra.  Despite only recently signing a contract extension at Old Trafford, rumours have circulated suggesting the France defender could possibly leave the club.  If United having two left-backs good enough to be first choice has led to such suggestions, adding another only increases the chance of someone being unhappy at a lack of gametime.

A fee of around £15 million is reportedly what Rodriguez’s club want if they are to sell him.  After already spending £30 million on Shaw this summer, there is a chance United could be reluctant to spend so much more on a position that can only be occupied by one man at a time.
