Whilst the World Cup was ongoing, there were rumours linking Bayern Munich’s Dutch winger Arjen Robben with a move to Old Trafford. He is undoubtedly one of the best wingers in world football. At the age of 30, though, would he be a worthwhile signing?
Many reports suggested that Manchester United were looking at Angel Di Maria, but the Express say that Paris Saint-Germain have now appeared as front runners to sign the Argentina international. This has meant that the focus has switched to Robben.
A lot of Dutch players, including Daley Blind and Wesley Sneijder, are being linked with the Manchester club due to the fact that Louis van Gaal is the Red Devils’ new manager and is expected to link up with the squad in the middle of the week.
The only problem I can see with signing Robben is his age, the same with Wesley Sneijder. They are both 30 years old and once you hit that age you usually lose some physical attributes such as pace. This is such an important asset to Robben ,who is often seen sprinting past full-backs with incredible speed. Once he loses that he will struggle to impact a match, in my opinion.
Robben does have Premier League experience from his time with Chelsea and this could be a big advantage, because he may not need a lot of time to get used to the pace of the English top flight, something that many players struggle with. He also knows Robin van Persie well in addition to the manager and this could help him settle.
Overall, I think that Robben would be a good signing for United but they should not pay a huge sum of money for him due to his age. I think they could get two years of top quality out of him at the most.
