Dejan Lovren Set To Seal Liverpool Switch – Why This Could Spell The End Of Daniel Agger’s Anfield Career

When Dejan Lovren stated recently that his head was already at Anfield, many people deemed a move to Liverpool to be an inevitability.  According to the Liverpool Echo, said transfer is edging closer as the Reds continue to discuss a deal for the centre-back with Southampton.  Once those negotiations are completed, however, Brendan Rodgers must address issues regarding one of his current defenders.

Daniel Agger has been outspoken when asked about his situation at the club, stating that he was unhappy at not playing as much as he would have liked last season.  With Martin Skrtel virtually ever-present, Agger had to share the role of partnering the Slovakian with both Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure.  Having played alongside Skrtel regularly in the past, it is understandable how the 29-year-old may have felt frustrated at a lack of gametime.

As Denmark’s captain, Agger is someone who has proven himself to be a leader.  Sitting on the substitutes’ bench hardly matches the description of such a player, with the need to be on the pitch more significant for him due to his position with his national team.

Adding another defender to their ranks could mean Agger is featuring in even less matches.  When Lovren finally does arrive, it would be no surprise to see Liverpool part ways with their long-serving centre-back.
