Reds Eye Marco Reus – Why Liverpool Could Make A Move For The Winger

Brendan Rodgers is believed to considering submitting a bid in the region of £30 million to Borussia Dortmund for attacker Marco Reus. Reus, 25, recently turned down a contract extension with the 2013/14 Bundesliga runners-up. The winger scored 21 times in 39 appearances last season, gaining the interest of arch rivals Bayern Munich, Brendan Rodgers’ new-look Liverpool, Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United and Spanish giants Barcelona.

Despite Reus’ contract not expiring until 2017, Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp will assess the club’s options to make sure that the talented player does not leave on a free transfer and they get the best possible price for him, whether that is this summer or next.  At 25 years of age, Reus is yet to reach his peak and would only add to the depth this Liverpool team needs. It is also well known that Reus would like to play in the Premier League, and Liverpool could be a realistic option after the club recently returned to the UEFA Champions League.

Not only can Reus play on the wing, he could also play as a striker next to Daniel Sturridge, who is alone after the departure of Uruguay’s controversial striker, Luis Suarez, to Barcelona. Liverpool, though, must be wary of players with big price tags. Since the purchase Andy Carroll in January 2011 for a club record £35 million, the Reds’ owners have been cautious to give out such large sums of money. However, given the fact that, unlike Reus, Carroll had never played in the Champions League or won a top flight title, it is unlikely the Germany international would turn out to be such a flop.
