Report: Arsenal desperate to sign a free agent for defensive cover

The summer transfer window might have slammed shut but Arsenal’s desperation to sign a defender looks to have reached its peak. British Tabloid METRO have reported in the wee hours of yesterday that the Gunners are looking to bring in the 38 year old Colombian Mario Yepes to the Emirates. The player who captained the Colombian national team is currently a free agent and could be well looking for a chance to feature in the Premier League before he ends his career on a high.

The London club are in desperate need of a defensive cover as manager Arsene Wenger failed to sign a player who can replace the departed Thomas Vermealen to Barcelona. Moreover the French manager is also apprehensive should injury strike either of Laurent Koscielny or Per Mertesacker, the French German pair who are the first choice in the defensive back line. New signing Calum Chambers can step up but given the player’s age and inexperience at playing in a top flight club really concerns Wenger.

Yepes is a free agent after leaving Italian side Atalanta at the end of last season, and the report claims that the player’s agent told reporters last month that he is in England looking to sign for a Premier League team. The veteran has made almost 600 professional appearances to date which would give Arsenal great experience in his young squad.
