Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Angel Di Maria’s exorbitant wage demands led to his departure. The Argentine had always been in good form for the Galacticos, so there were questions being asked on why he was sold to Manchester United.
Ancelotti told Cadena COPE, “Di Maria? I was in agreement with the club. There are times when the club needs to say no. You can’t change the policies of the club for one player.
“Di Maria asked for a lot of money and preferred to leave to go find it. The club couldn’t give him the money he wanted. They say that I’m the manager of the club; of course, I coach for the club, not for the players.”
Real Madrid signed James Rodriguez in the summer, and his impact at the club so far hasn’t been what was expected. The 23-year old has struggled to fit into the side and isn’t the same type of player like Di Maria. On the other hand, Di Maria has been in terrific form for Manchester United after his big money move from Real Madrid. It took £59.7m to sign 26-year old who is now the costliest player in Premier League history and since then he has set the league alight with 3 goals and 3 assists in 5 appearances.
On contrary to Ancelotti, Louis Van Gaal was ready to accept the wage demands of Di Maria. United were desperate to sign big name players after a poor season under David Moyes, and after having spent huge money on a number of players, they sure made a statement in the summer. After a poor start, United’s signings have started to click with Di Maria at the heart of it all.
One does wonder this: if Madrid were capable of paying €80m in transfer fee for a player, then they could have definitely kept a player of Di Maria’s quality at the club!
