Manchester United and Chelsea could enter a bidding war with each other as reports have emerged that both the Premier League clubs are tracking Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes.
The 21-year old is currently plying his trade with La Liga side Valencia after a 1-year loan deal was agreed with his parent club Benfica in the summer. According to Super Deporte, United and Chelsea have apparently sent scouts to monitor the midfielder’s progress which could ultimately result in them making bids to lure him to England.
Gomes has already impressed in the short spell so far which has raised a few eyebrows. Since moving to Valencia, he has appeared in all but one game and in the process he has played a key role in his side’s brilliant start to the season. Valencia are 4th in the league, just 2 points behind leaders Barcelona. Gomes was sent out on loan as the presence of Andreas Samaris and Enzo Pérez meant that his opportunities would be limited at Benfica.
Gomes is has been tried in a central role and a more holding role, however, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he is naturally a defensive player. The Benfica academy graduate can play in a slightly advanced role as well which only increases his value due to the versatility.
Valencia manager Nuno Espírito Santo has played the Portuguese in a slightly advanced role and it has paid off so far in the season. Gomes isn’t the guy who provides the final passes, but his link up play with the rest of the attack has been vital in Valencia’s surge this season. His absence was felt massively when Valencia lost to Deportivo la Coruna a few weeks ago; the only game he has missed so far and the only game that Valencia have lost so far!
