Good news for Manchester United as Dortmund star hints at a possible move to the Premier League

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has revealed that he wants to play outside Germany in the future with Spain or England being his preferred destinations.

Gundogan said, “Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals. If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England.”

The Turkish-born central midfielder has been linked with a move to Manchester United in the past, but the move has failed to materialise mainly due to the German’s poor injury record in the last few seasons and Dortmund’s departure list. A plethora of star names have left Dortmund in the last few years so it was imperative that Jurgen Klopp held on to Gundogan. His injury put off potential buyers to some extent as he had been ruled out for the entirety of last season.

The 24-year old returned to action last month against Koln after having missed 15 months out due to a spine injury suffered in August last year. It will take him some time to get back to the high standards that he had set before his injury as it’s never easy to return from a long-term layoff.

With Dortmund struggling this season, there is a growing sense that there could be a mass exodus come January if they are in no position to challenge for a Champions League spot. In that case, the top European clubs will be waiting to pounce.

Real Madrid approached Gundogan in the past

The midfielder also said that his club rejected an offer from Real Madrid in the past, “Real Madrid made an offer for me but my club refused it.

“At the time I had two more seasons on my contract. But also, my injury wrecked everything. I couldn’t play for 14 months.”

“Now I want to look forward and make up for lost time with sporting success,” Gundogan added.
