Arsenal have reportedly tried to sign Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira by virtue of the German players present at their club. A few days ago, ESPN had reported that Khedira’s international teammates Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil spoke to him on a potential move to Arsenal.
The 27-year old’s current contract expires in the summer and despite him wanting to stay at the club, contract negotiations are yet to reach the final stage which have alerted a few clubs. The former Stuttgart man had recently revealed, “As of now, I see no reason to leave the club in the winter.
“Real Madrid are a great destination, and I have locked this club in my heart. There are no grounds for me to say that I want or that I have to leave.”
Khedira will come cheap in January if he goes on without signing a new deal until then. His international teammate Mertesacker recently told in a Q&A session that he tried to speak with Khedira about a possible move, “I’m up for more quality Germans joining the club.
“[Mesut] Ozil and I spoke to Khedira a few times about joining Arsenal. His contract is up next summer.”
Khedira recently returned to the Real Madrid side after a surgery on his knee. Prior to that, a cruciate ligament injury during November last year ruled him out for more than five months. He did however appear for his national side in the World cup and picked up his winners’ medal.
Arsenal have struggled this season with and the defeat to Manchester United, they now have their lowest points tally in more than two decades at this stage. Arsene Wenger’s side dominated the game against United, but were unable to find the net or prevent their opponent’s counter-attacking moves that led to the goals. One reason being is the lack of a natural defensive midfielder. The North-Londoners have been susceptible to counter-attacks as their midfield isn’t well equipped to break the play. The addition of Khedira will definitely help in finding a solution to that problem.
