Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea’s future has been subject to some speculation in the last few weeks as his consistent performances have resulted in rumours linking him with a possible move to Real Madrid.
De Gea had revealed a few months ago that he wants to stay at United despite the rumours linking him with Real Madrid, however, with the Red Devils yet to offer him a new contract, the speculation refuses to die down
Spanish football expert Gerry Armstrong believes that there is no reason why United will want to sell the former Atletico Madrid player who is still very young and could potentially become a legend at Old Trafford, “I don’t think United will let him go after spending so much time to recruit him. I remember [former United goalkeeper coach] Eric Steele coming over to watch him at Atletico at least 15 or 16 times one season.
“I don’t think they’re under any pressure to sell him, Louis van Gaal is rebuilding the side and you don’t let your best players go.
“De Gea is world class and there’s no way I can see him leaving United, not for at least another two or three years.
“Real aren’t desperate for a goalkeeper at the moment, Casillas has found his form again and has re-established himself.
“He’s still Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper, but De Gea is their best option for the future and he will be Spain’s number one within the year. He is different class,” he told The Sports Bar.
United have won six games in a row after an indifferent start and have done so thanks to De Gea’s excellent form this season. United’s defence looked ordinary against Liverpool in their last game as they were often breached by the Merseysiders’ pace up front, but they couldn’t get the better of De Gea, who put in a man of the match display. Despite conceding 17 goals in 16 games, De Gea has looked like a class apart from the rest of the United defence.
