Manchester United defender Paddy McNair has backed former Red Devils skipper Nemanja Vidic to make a return to the club, reports Daily Star.

The former Manchester United captain left Old Trafford last summer for Italian Serie A side Inter Milan. Since his arrival at San Siro, the Serb is yet to prove his form of old. The arrival of Roberto Mancini at Inter has developed some reports of the defender making make a shock return to the Premier League. It was evident by the fact that the 33-year-old centre-back was an unused sub in Inter Milan’s 1-1 draw with league leaders Juventus as Serie A, Italy’s premier competition returned from its winter break.

Defender McNair, who is in manager Louis Van Gaal’s scheme of things has openly admitted that he would love to play alongside Vidic for United.

When McNair was asked to choose who he’d prefer to play alongside between Vidic and Jaap Staam, he told the Manchester United’s website: “To be honest, I never really saw Stam play, so I’ll have to say Vidic. I grew up watching Vidic play when he was here, so I’ve got to go for him.”

However Vidic doesn’t feature in McNair’s all-time top two of favourite defenders, but Vidic’s partner in crime and another ex-United defender, Rio Ferdinand, features.

He added: “All-time, probably Rio Ferdinand and Sergio Ramos. I trained with Rio a few times when he was here, and he passed on a few tips, and Ramos is a really good player for Real Madrid. He’s more of an all-round footballer than a defender,” he added.

With United having some problem in their defence, Vidic’s arrival would be a blessing in disguise for the Red Devils who are fighting hard to finish in the top 4.
