Diary of a Sky Sports Soccer Saturday Reporter

On the trip to cover Blackpool vs Millwall for Sky, the lead sports story surrounded racist remarks made about golfer Tiger Woods by his former caddie Steve Williams.

It wasn’t the first time Williams had said something idiotic, and probably won’t be the last, but it reminded me of some comments made by another top golfer Phil Mickelson about the big-mouthed Kiwi a few years earlier. In response to another ignorant Williams blast, Phil said ‘it just shows how lucky I am to have Bones (nickname of Mickelson’s caddie) on my bag – he’s a class act’. It said everything.

It would only be a few hours later that I’d get to watch another class act in the shape of veteran striker Kevin Phillips. The pint-sized Blackpool front man has upset a few clubs over the years but there’s no denying he’s a top player as he came off the bench to score a superb winning goal from 25 yards.

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Take a bow Kevin Phillips, take a hike Steve Williams.
