Do Southampton want to keep Jason Puncheon? No they don’t, yes they do.
Confused yet? I would be after Blackpool’s latest approach for Saints winger Jason Puncheon has been rebuffed despite the player’s agent claiming that Nigel Adkins’ league leaders do not want him.
Puncheon’s representative Tony Finnigan, or Agent Finnigan to the super-hero fans amongst us, claims that Blackpool had one “fair” offer declined last week and reports are saying that a fresh offer, reportedly in the region of £650k has also been scoffed at.
This has left Mr. Finnigan bemused, “I have no idea why they wouldn’t accept Blackpool’s offer… Southampton need to get this player out of their hair” said the pesky agent, who to be fair, isn’t amongst the majority breed of greedy football agents who hold out for the biggest fee, “if he could go for 50p, I’d be delighted” he claims.
Obviously, to the frustration of Ian Holloway, who is apparently fighting several other clubs for the “unwanted” star, he will cost a bit more than fifty pence.
Holloway is a long term admirer of Puncheon after he had the winger on loan for the second half of Blackpool’s stint in the Premier League, where he scored three goals, and Holloway told the Blackpool Gazzette that “he proved what he could do when he was on loan… I think he would add to our squad”, which currently lies just on the edge of the Championship play-off spots.
The 25 year old Puncheon has illustrated what he can give to a side in the past with some vibrant performances for Barnet and the MK Dons, as well as getting into the League One team of the year for the 2009-2010 season. However, he has become something of a traveller in the football league, having thirteen separate spells with seven different clubs, whilst Adkins soon lost his patience with the winger, preferring to promote the only-just-in-nappies Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain before his lucrative move to Arsenal took place.
His latest stop was at Premier League side QPR, after a short stop at Milwall, but only managed two substitute appearances before returning to re-familiarise himself with the bench at St Mary’s. Nigel Adkins refuses to certify the agent’s claims that he is not wanted by Southampton, wanting instead to do more deliberating “we need to sit down and see what the future holds”, which will come to more annoyance of camp Puncheon and everybody at Blackpool who are convinced the winger’s future definitely lies elsewhere.
