Unfairly criticised, unlucky that he didn’t join Sunderland in the summer, now finally is the news that Darron Gibson’s been waiting for.
He has finally got his fresh start that he’s been looking for as it’s been announced that he has signed for Everton.
Throughout his career at Old Trafford, Gibson was criticised by United fans who just saw him as a lad with a long shot on him who wasn’t good enough long-term to be a Manchester United regular. In truth Gibson was unlucky as he wasn’t in all honesty that bad.
He was good going forward, a decent passer of a ball and is a midfielder who has the ability to score 10 goals a season. It’s just that at Old Trafford sometimes that isn’t good enough and after sitting out last season on the sidelines, a move to pastures new was what he needed.
At Everton under David Moyes he will get a chance to solidify his place in a team and grow into a first-team regular who will have to deal with the pressure of playing week in/week out which will be the best thing for him at this stage of his career.
It’s a shame that in many ways he has been used as a scapegoat by some of the United fans who turned on him essentially after one bad performance without really ever wanting to believe that he could turn his patchy form around and become a great at the club.
I wish Darron Gibson all the best at Everton. They are a club who have a great history who are long overdue some success. He will no doubt benefit from playing alongside former United players Tim Howard, Phil Neville and Louis Saha, growing into the player that Ireland see on a regular basis.
Everton fans may now be worried that the signing of Gibson will in effect be down to one of Jack Rodwell or Ross Barkley moving on in the summer, but there’s no reason why Moyes shouldn’t be able to hang onto both of those midfielders for now at least.
