Leeds United’s ‘Braveheart’

There hasn’t been a lot to shout about at Leeds United of late, the form card doesn’t look that great with 1 win, 1 draw and 4 defeats in their last six league games. However there is one shining light at Leeds that could help the club get back in the play-offs, he is Robert Snodgrass.

Since Gary McAllister brought Snodgrass to Leeds at the start of the 2008/09 season he has been a fan’s favourite. The tricky winger regularly performs highly for Leeds with his ability to take players on to create scoring opportunities for the Strikers from wide areas. Snodgrass also contributes well with the goals scoring 9 already this season.

What most impresses me about Snodgrass is the control he has on the ball. When he runs at defenders he has unbelievable balance and it’s as if the ball sticks to his boots as he works his way to create a chance. Many clubs have chased him up and Leeds regularly have to fight off clubs to prevent losing their prized asset.

Snodgrass also has the ability to score from a dead ball situation with his talents from a free kick his left foot is lethal. His ability was shown in the FA Cup match in 2009 against Manchester United at Old Trafford, when his free kick beat the United keeper as it crashed onto the bar.

Whilst playing for Leeds he got his first call up to the Scottish national side and now he features in the side every time there is an International fixture. This shows he has improved season by season as he is now one of the most, if not the most valued player at Elland Road. He is only 25 years old, at the peak of his career and if he stays injury free he has a great future ahead of him.

Hopefully Snodgrass won’t be tempted to follow the likes of Jermaine Beckford, Bradley Johnson, Max Gradel and now it looks like Jonny Howson out of Elland Road. If Leeds were to lose Snodgrass then it would take a very good player to replace him. He formed a fantastic partnership with Max Gradel last season with both players scoring 12 goals each.

Leeds need to start looking to push for the play-offs as someone like Snodgrass in a couple of years may want to be playing in the Premiership and if Leeds aren’t back in the top division by then, they will lose their treasured number 23.
