Tom Cleverley has been hailed as the future midfield maestro at Manchester United – for a young player who had a decent loan spell at Wigan Athletic last season, that is a strong statement and maybe he’s been over hyped just a little too much too soon.
Here are Tom’s apps so far this season:
Premier League: 5
Europe: 2
FA Cup: 0
League Cup:
Community Shield: 1
For a player who has played 9 games for Manchester United this season, is that what we are expecting to get from him, or is he more likely to become another squad player for us?
I personally don’t think he’s the solution for our midfield just yet, and that Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes is the ideal midfield partnership for us right now.
Also Paul Pogba seems to have agreed terms with Juventus (4 year deal/£20k a week) and we all know Darren Fletcher’s current problems. We do need to sign another player next season who can play 90mins every week in our central midfield area (Carrick is doing that now, and hopefully will continue doing so next season).
Although he is a decent passer of the ball, and his one-twos with strikers deserve a mention here – I don’t think his reading of the game is on a level it should be at this point.
Don’t get me wrong here, I absolutely love watching him play, and he is a decent player and could end up having a great career with United.
But his injury worries, oh boy. Lad seems to be injured all the time with all sorts of injuries. Is he too small/weak to be playing 90 minutes week in week out on this level?
At this point he has only completed 9 games (did not finish many of those games), 9 games out of 41 possible.
Is it just bad luck with injuries, or is he really just injury prone?
Let’s hope we will see him more on the pitch instead of on the physio’s table in the title run-in.
