If Saturday showcased anything for the fans, it was to catch a glimpse at the number of Belgium internationals that will be soon be part of the ‘Golden Generation’ for the nation. Eden Hazard soon to be of Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven’s Dries Mertens and Axel Witsel of Benfica, whilst the usual Premier League suspects, Thomas Vermaelen, Marouane Fellaini and Moussa Dembele of Arsenal, Everton and Fulham respectively, were all on show for the encounter between England and the European side at Wembley.
Yet one player in particular, especially for fans of Tottenham Hotspur, would have been watched with keen eyes in order to ensure he is worth all the fuss surrounding him. That man is Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen, the defender that has been heavily linked with a move to the North London side. Reports suggested a deal was close on Friday and whilst Vertonghen himself denied the transfer was confirmed via Twitter, a move must be close.
In the 25-year-old, Spurs will, should he sign, be getting a defender that is widely perceived to be one the best in Europe. The ability to bring the ball out of defence effortlessly, his strength in the air and continental approach to defending will see him a fine addition at White Hart Lane. With Ledley King expected to retire and Ryan Nelsen set to be released, Vertonghen will be an excellent signing to partner Younes Kaboul at the back.
With the two players the same age, the potential to for the duo to form a long-term partnership in the heart of the Spurs back-line is evident to all. With personal terms all but agreed between the player and club; all that is needed is for Spurs and Ajax to agree a fee that will see Vertonghen make the switch from Holland to England. If you haven’t seen the young Belgian in action, the video available will show why a copious amount of fuss has been made of him.
