If ever there was a striker that has shot to prominence so quickly over one season, it has surely got to be Robin Van Persie. Arsenal’s striking sensation again caused shockwaves across Europe with another sensational campaign for the North London side, netting 37 goals in all competitions as the Gunners secured a place in the Champions League for an impressive 15th consecutive year.
Understandably, interest is high in the 28-year-old and the fact that he is out of contract in 12 months time will only see the speculation heighten regarding a possible move. It is no surprise to hear that Arsenal are overly keen to keep hold of their talismanic captain and with the European Championships fast approaching, the club will be eager to tie him down to a new deal sooner rather than later.
Chief executive Ivan Gazidis, on Wednesday, spoke of how the Gunners won’t be rushed into make a decision on his future, but that could be considered the wrong choice to make. Van Persie is a player who, let’s face it, deserves to be winning trophies and for a club of Arsenal’s stature to have won nothing since 2005 is, to put it bluntly, unacceptable.
Now is the time for the five-time Premier League winners to show their ambition and really spend big this transfer window. Lukas Podolski has arrived from Cologne, and whilst he is a shrewd acquisition by manager Arsene Wenger, the club need to aim higher and continue to influx of new arrivals.
It is reported that financial reasons won’t be why Van Persie leaves and if that is the case, then the players they bring in this summer could determine whether or not they keep hold of their star man.
