The rumour mill is one the never stops. With Harry Redknapp now at the helm of Queen’s Park Rangers, the R’s have been linked with a host of Premiership experienced players. One of those is Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.
The England international has been in scintillating form for the North London side this season, netting 10 goals in 19 appearances in all competitions, including an impressive brace during the recent 3-1 win over West Ham United.
It’s an impressive turn around in fortunes for Defoe, who was linked with a move away from White Hart Lane over the summer. Under played during Redknapp’s reign as Spurs boss, new head coach Andre Villas-Boas has seen his faith in the 30-year-old certainly repaid.
After insisting that Defoe won’t be leaving for Loftus Road in January, the Portuguese tactician then compared the front-man to Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao. The same Falcao that recently netted his 50th goal for Atletico Madrid during Los Rojiblancos’ 4-0 win over Sevilla.
While it may be a comparison that will likely bolster the confidence of Defoe, Villas-Boas is surely kidding himself in insisting the pint sized hitman is in the same league as his Colombian counterpart. Le Tigre, as he is affectionately known, is one of the games most natural front-men and it’s no surprise to see him linked with a big money move away from the Vicente Calderon in January.
Spurs fans will testify to the capabilities of Defoe – his natural striking prowess is second to none on his day – but he doesn’t hold a candle to Falcao, no matter how many eye catching performances he puts on at White Hart Lane.
