It’s becoming a regularity to see the name Chelsea Football Club dragged through the mud, sadly. Recently engulfed in two high profile racism cases coupled with the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo, the Blues have come under heavy scrutiny from those in and around football.
The latest comes following the emergence that all charges have been dropped regarding Mark Clattenburg. The Premiership referee has been cleared after being accused of racially abusing Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.
The official was back in action on Sunday, acting as the fourth official during Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 win over West Ham United, and is to take charge of the encounter between Southampton and Norwich City tonight.
Chelsea have since issued a statement admitting their regret at not giving more consideration to the allegations made against Clattenburg. With the statement, Twitter again suggested that the Blues fell short of their requirements by not apologising to the referee.
While it has been a nasty affair for all those involved, the Blues have nothing to apologise for. Yes, it wasn’t nice to see racism bought into football once again, but Chelsea were just following what they felt was the right thing to do.
Any reports made from Ramires had to be investigated by the FA and, as a result, the West London side were right in making the complaint to them, much like any work place would do. The club shouldn’t have made the ordeal as public as it was, that’s for sure, but by reporting the incident, they were just doing as any institution would do, regardless of whether they’re a football club or a supermarket, for example.
